Festival and Hornall Open Festival Results
Stirling hosted the Annual Open Gents Festival (+ to 9) and Hornall (10-28) Trophies on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
132 players competed in the Festival in showery/gusting windy conditions and 154 players competed in the Hornall with difficult spells of heavy rain throughout the day. The CSS rose to a max 73 on both days for members and visitors.
Nearly 20% of the field in the Festival returned "No Returns" and 33% in the Hornall .
Visitors came from over 35 clubs all over Scotland from Banchory in the North, St Andrews in the East, Helensburgh in the West and North Berwick in the South. One player travelled from Arcot Hall GC in Northumbria on Sunday.
Visitors dominated the prizes on both days with only three home players collecting prizes.
Craig Hughes Glenbervie GC playing off scratch returned an excellent four under par 68 to win by three strokes from Jim Simpson, Linlithgow GC. Craig had an impressive seven birdies: 1,3,4,5,7,17 & 18th offset with bogeys at 9,15 and 16th holes in half's of 32-36.
Jim made a poor start with an opening double bogey 7 but reeled off four birdies; 3,6,7 & 9 for an outward two under par 34. An inward nine was six pars, bogeys at 10 &11 and a birdie at 15 in half's of 34-37.
Plus 1 player David Simpson (club tba) was 3rd on level par 72 in half's of 39-33. Stuart McMehen Glenbervie GC opened with a treble bogey 8 but recovered to take 4th from 3 time champion Lindsay Blair , Grangemouth GC who pipped Martin Duncan (club tba) on the b.i.h. both players on 73.
Craig McGann, Dunblane New GC took 1st handicap on the b.i.h. from Steven Bennie, Linlithgow GC, John Thompson, Stirling, Martin Duncan (club tba) all players on net 70.
Craig had a tidy card with 16 pars a birdie at 1st and solitary bogey at the 8th.
Afternoon tee-time players dominated the prizes in the Hornall on Sunday. However, Richard Horsburgh, Dundas Castle with an 8.52 tee-time managed his game and the conditions to win by three strokes, with a six under par net 66. Richard's highlights were birdies at the7th and 16th in half's of 40-42.
Noel Masterson, Stirling was runner up on net 69. Noel recovered with a triple bogey run at 15,16 and 17 with a closing birdie in half's of 41-39.
Mark Newton, Grangemouth GC was 3rd pipping Greg Murphy (club tba) on the b.i.h.both players on net 70.
Jonathan Balloch Grangemouth GC took 5th on net 72 beating home players Sandy Donoghue, Les Cook and Matthew Bonar, Tillicoultry GC and Anthony Ivatt, BraeheadGC.
Paul Pickles Glenbervie GC took 1st scratch on 81 beating James Barclay Braehead GC on the b.i.h. Trevor Boyd ,Stirling recovered from an ugly outward 45 with an inward two over par 38 for 3rd on 83.
This week-end players will compete in the August Medal. The winner and ties in each class will qualify for the Medal Finals later in the month.
