No fewer than four trophies were decided on Saturday. The Autumn Meeting Scratch Medal was won by Murray Ferguson while the Handicap prize was collected by Robin Burgess. In addition, the K G Patrick medal for the lowest aggregate gross score in the Spring and Autumn meetings was won by club champion, Kevan McArthur while Scott Sutherland clinched the Infirmary Cup with a combined net score of 139.

In class one, Murray Ferguson’s superb round of 70 featured three birdies and one bogey at the short 10th. Only working part-time is clearly paying dividends. Two shots behind Murray was Andrew Ion Jnr whose late bogeys at 16 and 17 proved costly. Third place went to Chris Goode who went out in level par but couldn’t quite maintain the momentum, coming back in 41.

Class two was won by David Dryland whose net score of 65 contained birdies at 11 and 16. Unfortunate bogeys at 17 and 18 ultimately cost David the chance of the Handicap Medal. Andrew McIntosh finished one shot behind David after a super back nine topped off with a birdie at 18. One shot further back, Scott Peebles also played the inward half well to record a net 67, the same score as Walter Smith whose highlight was a birdie at 13.

In class three, Robin Burgess got off to a fantastic start and reached the turn in 40. A disastrous run from the 11th to the 15th saw him shed 11 strokes but he regained sufficient composure to win by a single shot with an excellent 64. He was chased all the way by John Cattigan whose strong finish included a birdie at the 17th. Two shots behind John was Michael Willis who was in pole position after a fine front nine but slipped up with double-bogeys at 11 and 15 on the way home.

Results

Winning end to the season for the Seniors team....

Seniors Match V Buchanan Castle 23rd August

After the disappointing start to the 2010 season, Stirling Golf Club Seniors finished with 3 wins in a row, beating Buchanan Castle in the last home match after the previous wins against Ratho and Dunblane, which meant a mid table finish, after propping up the league for a good number of weeks.

There were no Stirling losers in this final match, with Duncan McCallum and Ian Muir getting the side off to a winning start against K McLachlan and G Alexander.

Ian Waller and Graham Manson then followed with a convincing win against J Holt and H McKaig before the first of the two halved games when Ian Cockshoot and Graham Leisk drew with S Moore and B Cooper which prevented the possible whitewash.

Mike McCallum and Ian Hume also won against Ray Davidson Carr whose partner did not show, to make it 3 ½ to ½ after only 4 matches to register the win, and from then on it was simply a matter of by what margin.

Jim Fleming and Mike Fabisiak put the 4th win on the board for Stirling when they beat Buchanan Castle’s Club Captain Ian Symington and G Dawson before the halving of the last match when Robin Limmack and Ray Crockett drew with R Burdon and N Maddocks. The final result was 5 : 1 for Stirling.

The only remaining fixture for 2010 is the Presentation Day which is hosted this year by Stirling on 6th September when the Stamper Trophy is up for grabs.

36 Members took part in the Club Mixed Foursomes on Sunday. After some early rain, conditions turned quite pleasant and a good day was enjoyed by all. It can be a challenging format for Ladies and Gents alike, and the winners are to be congratulated on meeting all the challenges put before them during their round!

Strongest on the day were Moneena and Colin Peebles, who carded a net 68.5 and won the trophy by virtue of a better last 6 holes than Cate and Willie Straub in second place. Anne and Colin Griffin came third with 70.5, again having a better last 6 holes than Cecilia Ferguson and Richard Park in fourth place. Thanks to everyone for staying for the prizegiving and it is to be hoped this event will continue to grow in popularity in the future.

145 players took part in the Wednesday Medal including those contesting the Finals in each Class, by virtue of their qualification in earlier Wednesday Medals. Conditions were fine and the CSS remained at 71, so a good number of the field (42) matched par or better, and 25 players had at least one 2 on their card.

Alex Hogg’s 2 at the 10th hole was one of only two scores other than par during his round – the other being a bogey at the 13th – and his very consistent 16 gross pars earned Alex a net 65 and the best score of the day. The next two best net scores also came in Class 1, with Andrew Wilson on 66 and Chris Goode with 67.

Alex Hogg, along with the winners in Classes 2 and 3 (Wraight Shepherd, Tom Gourlay and Neil Malone) qualify for next year’s Finals.

In this year’s Wednesday Medal Finals congratulations go to Kevan McArthur who won the Class 1 Final with the lowest gross score of the day (70), just beating Scott Neil with a better back 9. Andrew Wilson’s excellent net 66 gave him an impressive 4 shot victory in the Class 2 Final, and Neil Malone’s 69 in Class 3 also gave him a comfortable Finals win.

Iain Munro’s rich vein of form continued with an excellent bogey-free round of 69, featuring birdies at the 7th, 14th and 16th. Even this was not enough to secure a place on the Class 1 leaderboard with four players beating Iain’s score. Kieron Aldridge and Robbie Robertson both shot 66 – Kieron was two under par after eleven holes but dropped a stroke at 17 while Robbie birdied the 1st and 6th but then spilled shots at 7 and 9 before coming home in 39. Two regular visitors to the prize podium, Rab Cunningham and Scot Neil, finished on 68 after steady rounds.

In the second class, three players tied on 68. Iain Wallace shot the best outward half of 38 only failing to par the two short holes. Two strokes behind at this stage was his namesake, Alister, who double-bogeyed the 7th while Graeme Allan’s double-bogey at the 9th left him three shots adrift. Graeme dropped only one more shot while the Wallaces both had double-bogeys on the back nine, Alister at the 13th and Iain at the 14th.

The best net score of the day was in the third class – a superb 64 by Angus McKean. He had an excellent outward half, comprising one birdie, 6 pars and two bogeys and held his nerve on the back nine to win the class by 4 shots. Laurence McLennan and Graham Matchett both had a chance to emulate Angus but Laurence finished with two double-bogeys while Graham dropped five shots over the last four holes.

It was also a memorable day for Scott Monteith. After an uninspiring start, he was four-over par after five holes but then had a hole-in-one at the 6th. Unsurprisingly, he was a bit discombobulated by this and shot a quadruple-bogey at the next hole.
